بكثير من الترهيب والاستعراض، داهم عناصر من الأمن العام، الخميس في 9 أيار 2024، 5 مقاه في شارع الحمرا، للبحث عن أخطر المجرمين ومنتهكي القوانين اللبنانية، أي العمال/ات السوريين/ات. وضمن نشاطاتهم التشبيحي، أقفل العناصر مقهى «تحت الشجرة»، بذريعة تشغيله سوريين لا يملكون إقامات، واعتقلوا عدداً منهم.

ووفق بيان أصدره رواد المقهى، فإن العناصر كانوا يحملون السلاح وطلبوا عند دخولهم هويات العمال، ما دفع الزبائن إلى التجمهر أمام المقهى في محاولة لمنع إقفاله واعتقال موظفيه، معتبرين أن «وضع غالبية السوريين في لبنان غير قانوني بسبب إجراءات الحكومة، وبسبب إجراءات متعددة في سورية تمنع عودة أهلها إليها».

General Security Raids Cafes in Hamra Searching for Syrian Workers

Through extensive intimidation and a conspicuous show of authority, elements of the General Security conducted raids on five cafes along Hamra Street on Thursday, May 9, 2024, to apprehend what they deemed as the most dangerous criminals and violators of Lebanese laws, specifically Syrian workers. As part of their crackdown activities, the elements closed down the “Under the Tree” café, citing the employment of Syrians without residency permits, and arrested several of them.

According to a statement issued by the café’s patrons, the security personnel were armed and demanded the identification of the workers upon entry, prompting customers to gather outside the café in an attempt to prevent its closure and the arrest of its employees. They considered “the majority of Syrians’ status in Lebanon illegal due to government measures and various procedures in Syria preventing their return”.
