رفض الطبيب في العيادات الخارجية، التابعة لمستشفى رفيق الحريري الحكومي، فنيك بابكيان إجراء عملية تصحيحية لعاملة مهاجرة بعدما أدى خطأ طبي إلى فشل عملية جراحية في إحدى قدميها، التي أصيبت بطلق ناري، رغم معرفته وتشخيصه أن عدم إجراء هذه العملية سيفقدها قدرتها على المشي.
كان من المقرر أن يغطي الصليب الأحمر تكاليف هذه العملية. لكن الطبيب فنيك على الرغم من قوله إن «هناك ضرورة ملحة لإجرائها»، رفض أن يغطي الصليب الأحمر تكاليفها.
أما السبب وراء رفضه، فهو أن العاملة المقيمة في لبنان منذ خمسة أشهر فقط، والتي لا تجيد اللغة الإنكليزية، لم تستطع تذكر التاريخ الذي أصيبت فيه، ولا اسم المستشفى الذي أجريت فيه العملية الأولى، ولا اسم الطبيب الذي عالجها.
اتصل الطبيب بالصليب الأحمر، وأخبر المعنيين فيه أنه غير موافق على تغطية الصليب الأحمر تكاليف هذه العملية، لأن لديه شكوك تجاه القصة وشعور بأنها غير صادقة.
في الوقت نفسه، أخبر الفتاة أن بإمكانه إجراء العملية لكن على نفقتها الخاصة، مقابل 2000 دولار أميركي.
وبالفعل، رفض الصليب الأحمر التكفّل بالحالة، مما دفع العاملة للتوجّه إلى طبيب آخر وصف حالتها بـ«المستعجلة» و«الخطيرة». كما وصف سلوك فنيك بـ«اللا إنساني».
وأضاف أنه «حين نتحدّث عن احتمالية فقدان القدرة على المشي لشابّة في الواحد والعشرين من عمرها، يصبح تاريخ الجرح غير مهم على الإطلاق».
وكانت العاملة، التي تعيش في البقاع، قد تعرضت لطلق ناري في قدمها من قبل كفيلها، ثم أسعفت إلى مستشفى في المنطقة لإجراء العملية. وبعد ذلك، نقلت إلى بيروت و«رميت» في الجناح.
A foreign worker almost lost her leg because of the “inhumanity” of a doctor
A doctor in the outside clinics of the Rafic Hariri Governmental Hospital, Venik Papakian, refused to conduct a corrective surgery on a migrant worker after a medical error caused the failure of an operation on one of her feet, which was wounded initially by a gunshot, despite the fact that his knowledge and his diagnosis confirm that not performing this surgical operation would lead to her losing her ability to walk.
The cost of this surgery was first set to be covered by the Red Cross. Dr. Venik, although he had previously said that “there is an urgent need to undergo the surgery” refused to let the Red Cross cover its costs.
As for the reason behind his refusal, he claims that the worker who has been living in Lebanon for only five months, and who is not fluent in English, could not remember the date on which she was injured, nor the name of the hospital in which the first surgery was performed, nor the name of the doctor who firstly treated her.
The doctor called the Red Cross and told those involved that he did not agree to them covering the costs of this operation, because he had doubts about the story and felt that it was not credible.
At the same time, he informed the girl that he could perform the operation, but at her own expense, for $2,000.
Indeed, the Red Cross refused to ensure the case, which prompted the worker to go to another doctor, who described her condition as “urgent” and “dangerous.” He also described Venik’s behavior as “inhuman”.
He added, “When the talk is about the possibility of losing the ability to walk for a young woman at the age of twenty-one, the history of the wound becomes completely trivial.”
The worker, who lives in the Bekaa Valley, was shot in the foot by her sponsor (Kafeel), then was taken to a hospital in the area to undergo a surgery. After that, she was transferred to Beirut and “thrown” in the Jnah region.
